The medicine man from China who left a legacy here
In 1935 Mr Teo Peck Hiang, a qualified traditional Chinese medicine physician, and his children traversed the South China Sea from Thailand to reach Singapore. He set up Tong Kok Medical Hall with the aim of serving the Chinese diaspora. The medical hall was well received – not only for dispensing free medical treatment to the poor, but also for Mr Teo’s exceptional teaching abilities.
Physician Teo conducted classes at the Singapore Traditional Chinese Medicine College. He also assumed the role of Editor of the influential South Islands Traditional Chinese Medical Magazine and penned many well-received articles. Subsequently, he was invited to be the Chief Examiner of Thong Chai Medical Institution.
His pioneering efforts and active participation were recognized and appreciated for contributing towards the growth and development of traditional Chinese medicine in Singapore.
Mr Teo was also one of the founding members of Nanyang Pho Leng Hui Kuan which was set up in 1940.
