At the age of 13, Teo Buck Lang accompanied her dad, Physician Teo to Singapore. Soon after, she was roped in as an apprentice in his medical hall to treat, prepare and dispense medicinal herbs from his prescriptions.
Madam Teo acquired a deep knowledge for traditional Chinese medicine in the course of her daily work routine. Mentored by her enterprising and benevolent father, she was inspired to look actively for leads or opportunities to embark on with the intention to make life easier and healthier for people around her.
One day, while she was grinding pearls for treatment, she was struck by the intrinsic strong, resilient, and iridescent qualities of pearl. In that instance, it dawned on her that she would work towards developing a line of products underpinned by the health and medical benefits of TCM. Products that are as resilient and reliable as pearl and yet, affordable and can be consumed with ease of preparation under the Pearlring Brand banner.

In 1991, Madam Teo added ginseng to Bak Kut Teh spices to create a healthier version of this tropical dish without compromising its traditional taste.
In response to the need of urban dwellers for wholesome meals without being overwhelmed in the kitchen, she created Pearlring Ginseng Bak Kut Tea Spices in a sachet in the same year.
Families in Singapore are now able to enjoy the famous Singapore dish at home in 2 easy steps – simply add the sachet and ribs and bring to boil.
In 1995 Madam Teo developed Ginseng Chicken Soup Spices and in the following year, Ginseng Fu Gui Spices were launched under this label.
Pearlring Brand’s heritage in traditional chinese medicine is evident from the use of the ubiquitous herb Ginseng in these three products under the Ginseng Spice Series.

Madam Teo put into package form three herbal tea products using the prescriptions of her eminent father. In 1991 she brought Pearlring Cooling Tea and Pearlring Fever & Flu Tea into the local market. In 2006, she launched Pearlring Cough Tea in response to her perception of a lack of such a powdered herbal cure in satchet form in the market.
These products are all in convenient and practical “powdered sachet form” – light and easy to bring along as well as easy to consume.
Simply add hot water to the sachet in a cup for 5 minutes. Drink to imbibe the effective herbal tea formula that had alleviated the discomfort of countless people since the establishment of Tong Kok Medical Hall more than 70 years ago.
